As the first post of the New Year, I’d like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
If you’ve been following our articles for some time you already know that we don’t follow a very consistent schedule when it comes to keeping you updated.
And there’s a reason behind that APPARENT lack of consistency that is intimately related to our topic today.
Let me explain…
Internet Business Success Mindset
About a year and a half ago (possibly two) I came across a comment from Frank Kern which basically stated that…
If you believed your efforts would make you a million dollars, you would work on your projects pretty much non-stop until they were finished.
I’m paraphrasing his comments, but that was definitely the gist of his point.
Now, I agree with his basic premise.
The corollary (of “flip side” if you will) is this: why don’t people work on their projects CONSISTENTLY when it comes to running their online business?
And answering this question, my friends, is the first hurdle you will need to overcome in order to be successful online. And it is the single biggest reason that people fail to achieve even a fraction of their desired results.
The simple fact remains that most people don’t work consistently on their online business because they don’t believe it will eventually pay off.
For example, I’ve been self-employed since early 2004, and focused 100% online since early 2008.
There’s a LOT of water under the bridge, so to speak.
And in that time I’ve watched people come and go (when I used to attend business networking events) — a lot of people start, stumble and finally drop out.
In a similar vein when it comes to online marketing clients are willing to admit to me that 99% of the times their website have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for them.
And this leads to apathy… people giving up because they don’t believe that they can ever get any results from the web.
Many times they don’t believe that I can achieve any results for them. And they are absolutely astonished, dumbfounded you might say, when their website finally generates leads or sales for the first time.
It almost seems like magic.
No doubt about it — if you have never tasted success, success does seem like a pipe dream.
So getting your head right about this stuff from day one is simply a pre-requisite. A necessary first step before the hard work comes into play.
And that brings us to the…
Three Cardinal Rules for Internet Business Success
So what are the three most important rules for internet business success?
In no particular order they are:
- Focus
- Systems
- Testing
Do you remember the comment I made regarding the frequency of posts to this website and apparent lack of consistency?
Well, the reason that we don’t post articles here on a regular basis is because of focus. Namely, many of the websites we run and maintain generate a consistent stream of leads and revenue each month. And adding content THERE pays off for us… big time.
There are only so many hours in a day.
And even running a virtual team of people you can only accomplish so much by week’s end.
So focus is critical.
You have to link your focus with your ultimate goal: i.e. is spending time on Project A going to move you closer to your goals? If not, then focus elsewhere.
Next up is SYSTEMS.
Right about now I can almost see you nodding off. Trust me, when I give presentations this is the when people start to yawn or daydream (you can see it on their faces)… and this is precisely where their biggest challenge can be found.
Why?
Because you simply cannot generate consistent results if you are always reinventing the wheel… or winging it.
Replicate what works.
And that presupposes that you have a good idea of WHAT works — and what needs some attention.
It’s as simple as that.
Let me illustrate that point to you. Back in February we created a new lead gen site. Almost immediately we created leads.
After tweaking, testing, changing copy, etc. we were able to improve our conversion rate from 24.7% up to 33.9%.
Essentially, we created a system.
So when we rolled out three more lead gen sites in December, it didn’t take long to create more leads and results since we already had a working system to replicate and tweak.
And that’s the point.
Finally, you simply must test and measure to improve results.
And when you finally improve ONE aspect of your system, for goodness sakes leave it the heck alone and move on to another aspect of your system.
For example, I spent three months testing each element of the lead capture page on one of our websites. And after getting it right I haven’t touched it since then — though I have tested a lot of other surrounding elements on the site.
And that’s the point.
When it comes to getting results online, there is no half-way. You are either getting results or you are getting nothing.
That’s just the way it works.
So, if you really want internet business success, you will have to follow these tips and apply them to what you are doing (or not doing) immediately.
Anything else is just a waste of your time…
