Time and again people ask my why their site doesn’t come up near Google’s first page of results.
And time and again they mention how other SEO firms they hired were not able to generate any meaningful results for them.
In fact, a new client in NYC spent over $2,000 a month on SEO for three years with nothing to show for it, except failed expectations and an abiding lack of trust that SEO is worth a damn.
And who can blame them.
What’s more, so-called “internet gurus” can’t help them, or you, because their method for “generating traffic” has nothing to do with traditional businesses on the web.
Their model was to “build an email list” from “opt in boxes” — and then do some cross promotion with others in the “get rich quick online” crowd. They got traffic from “affiliates” who did what they could to send people to their site who opted in and then got bombed with emails daily until they bought or dropped off the list.
Sound familiar?
The end result of this was new FTC guidelines targeting affiliate marketing that came into existence around 2010 to combat their predatory practices.
Is article marketing still worth the effort?
Last year I wrote 191 articles for my websites as well as for clients. Additionally, I edited more than 100 articles submitted for my Alternative Medicine website.
That effort translated into more than 1,130 leads generated online and generated more than $75,000 dollars of revenue for me personally.
So how was I able to pull this off in a “down” economy?
It’s simple.
The internet runs on, is fueled by, CONTENT…
- new
- original
- keyworded
- relevant
- well written
…for a targeted audience that gets them to take an action once on your site.
That is the key to “internet riches.”
In fact, last year Google’s updates did not affect my websites, nor those of my clients. And that’s because we create content the old fashioned way… we actually write it.
No spun content or content writing “farms” can produce the kind of content that will:
- attract your audience to RESPOND to your site
- and please Google search algorithms.
It’s not the case that Google wants to “screw you” or your site.
They want to — NEED to — protect what I call
“search integrity.”
Search integrity is the reason why I started using Google back in 1998. Because when I searched on Google I found relevant stuff RELATED to what I was looking for. In other words, there was a direct match or correlation between what I typed in the “search bar” and the results Google returned to me.
That is why Google thrived while other search engines failed. People turned to them to find stuff (and they still do with a search engine market share > 83%) because the results were relevant.
So, any tweaks or modifications that Google does to safeguard “search integrity” is all about making sure their end users find what they’re looking for. Because if they don’t they’ll leave and go elsewhere.
Where the internet gurus of old had it right is that well written content motivates people to take an action.
It’s all about copywriting.
For example, one client posted an article a year ago that brings in more than 200 new visitors to her site each month. From that one article. But the people, once there, leave almost immediately. Her bounce rate is greater than 95% when people land on her site through that article.
Why?
Because of:
- poor layout
- poor use of headline
- confusing copy
- no call to action
In other words, original content properly keyworded brings them to the site… and well written content gets them to “buy” or become a lead for your business.
Period.
Nothing else works better than content marketing…
done right.
Google will love you for it because they NEED to serve up search results that are relevant to their end users, and you’ll love it when your site starts generating meaningful leads and / or sales for your business.
The alternative?
Spend thousands each month on pay per click advertising (not as successful as it once was pre-2008) or give up on the web entirely. The first option can send you to the poor house… while the second can make your business irrelevant in the coming years.
It’s your choice.
