Do you need to set up a new website, or update an existing one for your business?
When it comes to “getting your name out there” online how can you know that the site you’re about to complete will ultimately work for you?
Whether you’re getting started for the first time or you’re ready to update an old HTML website here are some tips for creating an effective business website.
3 Business website tips
When it comes to web marketing, and that includes your website, it’s important to think – and act – backwards.
What do I mean by that?
Think of it this way… what is the ultimate goal for the website you’re about to create or update?
If you are selling a product online the ultimate, and obvious, goal is to generate sales. And hopefully a lot of them. If you run a professional or medical practice the goal is going to be different. In this case your website’s main function is to generate leads online that you can integrate into your sales process and follow up with in order to get more clients or patients.
You might have noticed that this approach completely ignores – or sets aside – the whole question of colors, templates, logos and all of the other “visual” components that most people start with… and never move beyond.
That’s because most people build a site that they happen to like, one that fits their vision. Sadly, this approach completely ignores Rule #1: your site isn’t about you, it’s about THEM.
Your business website is not online to win an award or “look pretty.”
The ONLY reason for having a business website is to help you make more money. And stay in business.
That is why when it comes to creating your website you should start with the end result and then work backwards from what you consider the successful completion of your business goal or goals..
With this in mind here are three essential website tips to follow:
- make sure your site is built on a WordPress platform
- keep your web design template clean, uncluttered, with a font size and color easy to read
- make sure you use a “call to action” on each page and post on your site
Why WordPress?
Because if no one can find your site you may as well not even have one. WordPress sites are Google friendly, easy to work with, easy to update, and incredibly cost-effective.
When it comes to web design form should follow function.
The key is to make sure that the content on your site is readable. Make it easy for people to find your contact information by including your phone number on the sidebar where folks can see it – and presumably use it.
Finally, a “call to action” is simply the language you use to let people know what the next step or steps are in working with you, or buying a product from you. If you want the sale for goodness sakes ask for it. If you’d like people to fill out your web form then ask them to do so.
So who should you choose when it comes to getting a new website?
Work with the company or firm with a proven track record of generating sales or leads online. Everything else is unimportant.
Though the logo you may have spent big bucks on looks pretty your logo, on its own, will never generate a single lead or sale for your website. This is not my opinion – this is observable fact from doing web marketing full-time since early 2008. What generates leads and sales online is really quite simple… the successful application of what I call the “lead gen triangle.”
What do I mean by the “lead gen triangle?”
- the right traffic
- the right web design
- the right copy
First you have to get found.
When they find your site you need them to “stick” on your site long enough to interact with your content.
Once they engage your content you need them to “take the next step” with you, which means becoming a customer, client or patient.
That’s web marketing, in a nut-shell. And these three elements, when working together, form the bridge between website visitor and new customer or client. After all, the goal of your business website is to move a perfect stranger from “browser” to “buyer.”
And this can only happen if the three elements listed above work together.
