A long time ago we shared with friends and select clients a strategy to build “backlinks” to their website.
That strategy involved posting comments on other blogs that would “link” back to you.
Well the cat is out of the bag.
Every day our websites are getting bombed by SPAM comments.
You may or may not know or care about this, and it really doesn’t matter to you in the long run, but Success Marketing, LLC runs or maintains more than 14 websites… so we KNOW what we are talking about.
So why talk about it now?
Because it is STILL a viable option… IF you avoid the lazy, half-assed methods used by the 99%ers out there.
How to Get Backlinks: Comment Strategy Mistakes…
Let’s work backwards on this, okay?
The 99%ers I’m referring to is a “house” term Rob and I use to describe what everybody else is doing online. And what they are doing is misguided at best, or downright stupid, lazy and sloppy at worst.
Here’s what I mean…
You know you received a garbage comment on your site or blog when:
- The text says “great post” but it’s posted on one of your sales pages
- It shows up on articles buried deep in your archive (like more than a year old)
- They are unrelated to the content on the page
- They are overly promotional and have NOTHING to do with your site or content
- They seem to generic, like “great, well done! You are truly gifted!” (yes, we’ve seen this)
- Your tools indicate that the reverse DNS may be forged
- Excessive links in the comment text
- It just seems “fishy”
You have to understand that internet marketing is filled with fools, liars, cheats and morons. So some “guru” sold a bunch of people a software tool that promised to “automate” posting comments on blogs to generate “push button” results.
And if you think I’m “full of it” here is an excerpt from an email offer I received 45 minutes AFTER posting this article:
“Grab Backlinks Jackpot this weekend only for a BIG discount and discover all the basics of seo in only a few hours!”
Yeah, right!
When I say “push button” think lazy and ineffective.
And the end result for you if you buy this junk is wasted dollars, wasted effort, and a lot of frustration.
Got news for you…
Most people are now turning off the comment feature on their blogs to prevent the crap from pouring in. I’ve debated doing the same thing myself, but paying customers like to reach you with a comment.
So what the point of this rant?
- If you want to be effective online, ignore the 99%ers
- To succeed with a strategy, avoid over-hyped tools that are sold to the masses, because the 99%ers will ruin that technique for everyone else
- Do it right!
Comment Strategy 101
Can comments still work?
Sure, if you do it right. Here is a checklist for you:
- Research sites that are closely related to your niche
- Actually read (or scan) the post you want to comment on and add VALUE by making a relevant point (they’ll love you for this)
- NO LINKS in the comment text (a dead-giveaway that you are a spammer)
- You have to GIVE to GET
Understand this… anyone with a blog KNOWS WHY you want to post a comment (i.e. get a backlink).
They (we) are not stupid, okay you 99%ers.
So do it right and you’ll reap rewards. And if you do this from time to time, you may even be invited to guest post on the site you are adding value to.
What do I mean?
A guy who left a few comments on one of my sites ended up asking me to guest-post an article on his site. Then he reprinted an article on mine.
One day I generated a lead online that didn’t fit my needs but was perfect for him. So I sent it over.
Now he regularly sends me leads every month that fit MY target profile and not his. It has led to money in BOTH of our pockets.
That’s how you build a RELATIONSHIP online.
That’s how you do it RIGHT.
And it really can begin with a well-said comment on someone’s site.
Do it right online and you will succeed. Make shortcuts and you will be irrelevant (if you are not already).
So What’s the Next Step?
If you want to know how to get results for yourself, you have 3 choices:
- Do it yourself
- Have us do it for you
- Have us coach you to become successful
Now, we make 100% of our income online. And 100% of our traffic is from SEO.
And social media, DONE RIGHT, is ALL ABOUT SEO… but that’s another totally over-hyped topic that the 99%ers are clueless about.
And each month our business grows because we view our online efforts as building an ASSET.
No shortcuts here.
So what does that mean for you?
Increasingly we are cutting back on coaching because we only choose to work with 1%ers. If you believe that this describes you, then to get started…

After the call we will determine together which of the three options best applies to your situation.
Or you can do nothing.
Either way, it’s up to you.
