There is one prevalent (and for you a very dangerous) myth when you discuss how to generate website traffic.
The bottom line is that you don’t (can’t) generate traffic at all.
To use the language of fishing, you have to locate traffic “hooks.” Once that’s done it is simply a matter of using the right “bait” to get the job done.
Let me explain…
In the simplest terms possible you have to find what people are talking about.
Once you locate WHAT people are talking about and WHERE the discussion is taking place, your next job is to “attract” people to come and visit your site to see what you have to say (or offer) on the subject.
How to Increase Traffic to Your Website
There are three components that MUST work together to increasing traffic to your website. They are:
- Keywords
- Language
- Marketing
All of these three elements work together to increase the traffic coming to you site.
Of course, that’s only half of the problem. Once visitors come to your site the next step is to optimize your site so that visitors TAKE ACTION once they get there.
But that’s a lesson for another day…
To help you get a better view of the landscape, this discussion serves as the FOUNDATION of every web marketing strategy available to you. SEO — done right — is based on these principles. Success PPC campaigns are based on these principles.
Make no mistake about what we are discussing here, because THIS topic is where so many people get things painfully wrong.
So let me say this one more time…
You don’t generate traffic to your site at all.
You “find” traffic “hot spots” and then you create strategies to “divert” already existing traffic to your website.
To borrow from the analogy of going to a business networking event — you don’t start the conversation. Rather, you find out what people are talking about and you “enter into” the conversation.
And if you have something meaningful to say you will get their attention.
1. Keywords
Let me ask you a quick question. How do you know what people are looking for and talking about online?
The answer is simple…
Proper keyword research.
I can’t tell you how many times people tell me they are on the first page of Google for a “keyword.” And when I do research on the keywords I find that there is less than 10 searches a month for it.
Let me translate that for you.
If you waste time “optimizing” for keywords that don’t really exist because nobody is using them… well, let’s just say you’ll have a lot of page 1 rankings that will get you 0 traffic.
Finally, you have to understand that the days of loading a bunch of keywords onto your site AND having that work out for you are long over.
It’s about USING keywords on your site STRATEGICALLY so that they actually count towards helping you get on the first page of Google.
2. Language
This section is really deserving of it’s own post, which I’ll write when I get around to it.
If keywords are the drivers for traffic (and they ARE), then language is the engine for getting a steady stream of traffic to your site. And keeping them on the site once they arrive.
Now, in general to get people to connect with your message, you need to use language in a way that is:
- Conversational
- Adds value
- Asks for a “call to action”
The call to action could be asking them to click on a link, sign up for teleseminar, buy a product.
Whatever.
The key is this: IF you don’t ask folks to DO something, they will NOT do something.
So ask.
You’ll be surprised at how willing people are to do what you reasonably and gently ask them to do.
One final note about language. I was sharing with a friend of mine recently how small changes have DRAMATIC effects online.
For example, from no leads to a flood of leads just by changing the web copy.
Well, use of language is important for:
- PPC ads
- Meta description on your web pages
- Web copy
- Articles you write
In a word, everything online is based on effective use of language.
3. Search Engine Marketing
There is so much noise, fluff, misinformation and downright dangerous myths surrounding search engine marketing that it’s hard for most people to separate fact from fiction.
Case in point — Google pay per click can be expensive and not very profitable for you… IF you don’t know what you are doing.
Let me give you a quick pointer. If you only use the keywords that Google “recommends” for your campaign, good luck.
Remember, Google makes money off a CLICK. You make money from a lead or sale. There is a difference.
a CLICK ≠ a SALE (or LEAD)
Understanding that they NOT equivalent will pay dividends for you.
Here’s another point to remember.
To get more traffic to your website, you have to take action to get folks to your site.
And sometimes what you do is more about helping the search engines rank your site versus getting eyeballs to visit your site from some online marketing.
Here are some legitimate traffic strategies.
- post meaningful comments on a site that gets lots of traffic
- write an article and share it on a social media site
- distribute new content on social networks
- create online ads
- do a guest post on another blog
It’s not rocket science.
To be effective you need to know some techniques. For example, I can get any article I want in just about any niche to the first page of Google. It may take a week, a month or six months, but it will get there.
Content + Keyword + Technique = Results
But for any of that to WORK for you, you have to TAKE ACTION.
And that means doing something concrete today.
Here is How You Can Take the Next Step…
