Do you know what a false dichotomy is?
Simply put, it’s when two items or concepts are set up in opposition to each other – the typical either/or argument.
Online marketing is filled with false dichotomies. And when it comes to growing your business online unless you know or are aware of the many web marketing myths that are “out there” you just might be doomed to failure.
How do I know this?
Because over the past several years I have generated tens of thousands of online sales leads and helped business owners generate a couple million dollars of revenue (or more) in sales. Now, you might think that each business and website had unique issues and challenges. And in one sense that’s true.
However, the simple fact of the matter is that generating more business from the Internet comes down to applying a few, simple strategies – and using them effectively. On a consistent basis.
Let me explain…
The multiplicative power of leverage
The word” leverage” has many uses (I’m assuming) depending on the context of use. When I use the term leverage I mean getting more “bang for your buck” from the amount of effort you invest into your online marketing efforts.
Now, that’s a mouthful.
Here’s what I mean by that. A new client with a brand-new website went from 0 to 1000 visitors a month by using one simple technique. Each day he made a short video and posted it on YouTube with a couple links back to his site. He then created a blog post on his website and embedded the video there.
This, my friends, is a great example of leverage.
By posting on YouTube he was able to…
- create back links to his site in the description box below the video
- use their server to host and serve up his videos, which meant that his website continued to load quickly
- and by embedding the very same video on his website he was able to update his website on a daily basis, which is what Google is looking for
One task, multiple “jobs.”
By the way, when embedding a YouTube video on your website it’s a really good idea to create a few lines of intro text above the video and include a call to action below the video. This makes your blog posts “unique content” as far as Google and the other search engines are concerned.
Leverage.
The flip side is what I typically see (or hear) prospective clients doing — spinning their wheels and wasting a LOT of time, energy and money on “stuff” that will never pay off. Wasted effort with no pay off.
Do-it-yourself SEO
The reason why so many online enterprises fail to generate meaningful results is for the simple fact that they fail to generate enough traffic to their websites on a consistent, daily basis.
Look, you can hire all so-called SEO experts in the world to do all kinds of nonsense, but the simple fact of the matter is in today’s world SEO is something you can, and should, do for yourself. In other words, ONCE you have good keywords embedded on your webpages (i.e. actual keywords) and you’re targeting the right keywords for your content, you don’t really need to overpay for ongoing SEO support.
That’s yesterday’s internet.
Here’s what actual “do-it-youself” SEO comes down to my friends — some essential factors when it comes to climbing the “Google-ladder” are (in no particular order):
- having the right kind of website (i.e. a blog type website)
- updating your website on a regular basis
- posting original content on your website in sharing it on social media
- generating real (i.e. actual) back links from legitimate websites
How can you do this for yourself?
By creating content to post on your website and share on social media, or hiring someone to create valuable, unique, well-written (or well expressed) content for you.
So many people have bought into the hype of social media marketing leading to a flood of new customers and sales. For most businesses this is myth not reality. Social media works very well for keeping your customers informed about news or specials you might be running. But it’s not a great way to generate new customers on its own.
Sadly, social media marketing that is not connected to a content marketing strategy is a waste of your time and effort.
Why?
Because social media is a perfect place to share your content which, in turn, generates valuable back links to your site and help you rank better on Google in the search engine’s. Meaning, the more unique content you post on your site and share on social media the more traffic you generate for your website from search engines.
Another example of leverage, i.e. using one activity or marketing medium to do multiple jobs for you and your business.
